A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE RAINBOW FLAG

Originally designed in 1978 by artist Gilbert Baker, at the request of Harvey Milk as a symbol of LGBTQ+ rights, the Rainbow Pride Flag consisted of eight colours. Each colour was assigned a specific meaning.

After the assassination of Harvey Milk that same year, demand for the flag increased so drastically that the hot pink colour was dropped from the design due to the limited supplies of the fabric. Turquoise was eventually removed to create an even number of coloured stripes, resulting in the most commonly known six-coloured flag.
